Backup internet is worth considering when a rural connection supports paid work, farm operations, security cameras, remote learning, health-related communication, or business tools. A backup does not have to be fast enough for everything. It only needs to cover the most important tasks during an outage.

Common backup options

  • A phone hotspot for short emergency use.
  • A separate cellular data plan or router.
  • A second rural provider using a different technology.
  • Satellite backup for properties with no reliable tower or wired alternative.
  • A planned off-site location such as a library, office, neighbour, or family member’s home.

Plan by priority

List what must keep working: video calls, email, payment terminals, security alerts, farm software, or emergency communication. Then decide whether the backup must support one laptop, a whole home, or only a phone. Also consider power. If the outage is caused by a storm, the modem, router, and backup device may all need battery or generator support.

Simple backup rule: Different technology is usually better than the same technology. If your main connection is fixed wireless, cellular or satellite may be a more useful backup than another service using the same tower path.
